Rhodes MRC 2019
Rhodes Model Regional Co-operation 2019 is a partnership of the House of Europe in Rhodes, with the South Aegean Prefecture, the Municipality of Rhodes, the Department of Mediterranean Studies of the University of the Aegean, the Dodecanese Chamber of Commerce and the European Network for Education and Training – EUNET. Rhodes MRC 2019 will have two editions in Rhodes, the first edition will take place in October and it is attended by university students and young scientists. The second edition will take place in November and it is attended by High School students.
Rhodes MRC started as a small conference that brought together only 50 people in 2010 and it gradually evolved to host 700 participants last year. Over the past nine years, more than 1900 people from 28 countries have participated. Many attendees have been participating for two or three years in a row, while many have become more involved and staffed future editions of the conference by taking on roles and representing Rhodes in their cities and universities. Already, many of the graduates of the conference occupy positions in European institutions, large companies abroad, are researchers or lecturers in Greek and foreign universities, while remaining loyal friends of RhodesMRC and ambassadors of Rhodes island. This year over 480 students and scholars will come to Rhodes, with organized missions from 15 departments and universities as well as many individual participants from Greece and abroad.
It is one of the most extroverted academic organizations, with its various publications being sponsored by the Council of Europe, the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization and NATO, as well as the World Tourism Organization and the United Nations Regional Office, the United Nations, the Greek ministry of Shipping and Island Policy, as well as many Foreign Embassies in Greece embracing the conference.
The scientific validity of the conference is ensured by a Scientific Committee with 25 professors and specialists from Greek and Foreign Universities, as well as international collaborations, such as those with the International Center for Black Sea Studies, the Institute for European Policy and Integration, the Center for European and International Studies, Kadir Has University and corresponding international conferences such as Thessaloniki International Model United Nations and Model United Nations, Istanbul.
The great originality of the conference is that it takes place in various locations in the city center of Rhodes: the City Hall of Rhodes, the South Aegean Prefecture, the Dodecanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Stamatiou Foundation and the Best Western Rhodes Plaza and Mediterranean hotels, transforming the city of Rhodes in a huge conference room for four days. With the help of conference volunteers and the use of state-of-the-art technologies and best practices developed by the conference itself, the simultaneous meeting of 12 committees in multiple buildings becomes a reality and a unique experience for participants and the city.
Conference participants gain the experience of consulting, diplomacy, public dialogue, parliamentary work, working in a demanding, English-speaking environment, in the academic field of their interest, and at the same time experiencing Rhodes and its culture. RhodesMRC has become a reference point for the winter semester at participating universities and is now the largest corresponding event in the Mediterranean for this period.
The 10th RhodesMRC 2019 will take place October 09-13, 2019 for the university edition and November 07-10 November 2019 for the student. The university edition will simulate the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, NATO’s North Atlantic Council, the Council of Europe, the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization, the League of Arab States, the Organization of American States, the Asia – Pacific Economic co-0peration, the African Union, the Union for the Mediterranean, the Council of the European Union, the European Court of Human Rights (for the first time in Greece) and a special Conference on Peace in the Middle East. The high school version will simulate the Council of Europe in two versions, the European Union and an International Environment Summit.
Strengthening the ever-current theme of “Towards Effective Peacebuilding and Sustainable Development at a Regional Level”, from 2017, RhodesMRC honours and dedicates to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. All of our organizational charts and practices, committee issues and generally our behaviour as a conference are increasingly relevant to the Global Goals, in multiple direct and indirect ways, as well as communication
